Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos
Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1975. He studied painting and printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he later earned an MFA in Digital Arts in 2014. In 2021, he successfully defended his PhD thesis at Panteion University.
In 2003, Papamichalopoulos received a commission from the Benaki Museum to create a portrait of the museum’s benefactor, Andonis Benakis. The work entered the museum’s permanent collection in 2004.
Alongside his painting practice, Papamichalopoulos has developed a significant body of published graphic novels and artist books. His first graphic novel, The Japanese, was published in 2000, followed by The Japanese – Deuteronomion (2003) and Epilarchia! (2011). In 2015, he published k_porn, three colouring books (Après Dubuffet, Après Tanguy, and Biomorphic), as well as The Japanese 3.
His exhibitions often engage with mythology, history, and the evolving relationship between humanity and technology. Major solo exhibitions include The Great Golden Room at the National Museum of Greek Folk Art (2015); Talos – Representations of the Artificial Man at the café of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (2016); Zeus and Athena at the Archaeological Museum of Tinos (2019); Paliggenesia at the Athens City Museum (2021); Giants and Molossi at the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina (2025–2026); and most recently, Dragons at the International Art Center Athens - IACA (2026).
In 2015, he was an artist-in-residence at the Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier. He has also worked extensively as an illustrator, serving as cover artist for the Athens Review of Books and as a freelance illustrator for De Groene Amsterdammer for over a decade.
Papamichalopoulos is currently Assistant Professor at the School of Fine Arts and Art Sciences at the University of Ioannina. His work is held in numerous public and private collections in Greece and internationally.
