Jennifer Chenoweth's paintings reveal much of her inner life: the hard to pin down, the spiritual, the sensual. Chenoweth has earned a BFA in Painting/Sculpture from Kansas City Art Institute, a MA in Liberal Arts from St. John's College in Santa Fe, and a MFA in Painting/Sculpture from The University of Texas at Austin.
"Each painting begins with a meditation on an idea from my life, such as the resemblance between my son and myself, or hope for a relationship, usually something I'm feeling strongly about and spend my time thinking about while painting. I begin by planning the piece digitally and culling past works for marks and shapes that symbolize a particular feeling relevant to the current topic…"
Whereas abstract expressionism disdained careful mixing of paint mediums, indirect painting, and anything intentionally decorative, Chenoweth's work explores these practices. Her paintings include elements of both cartooning and prettiness, as well as areas of control that come from her deep interest in color, for example, layers of complex color glazes next to areas of quick gesture. Chenoweth's process includes taped edges, planned drips, and outlines. Her process depends on persistence, perception and discovery.
