Eggs“The Eggs series is an ongoing project that explores the prolific symbolism associated with eggs. One of the most comprehensive symbols, equally suggestive in spiritual, religious, physiological and cosmological sense - eggs can stand for primordial chaos, the universal matrix, the great Deep, the Virgin Mother and the Cosmos, among other things. “Although I am trying to represent eggs in a more conceptual manner, I still want to retain the “thing-ness” of it. I intend to give this quotidian matter a visual charge and imaginative possibility beyond its everyday function. I hope to entice my audience’s visual curiosity by inviting them to contemplate the subject in new ways. “This is also an attempt to blur the lines between photography and other artistic disciplines. I want to challenge photography as a representational medium by defying the process of picture making itself, while also attempting to blur the lines between photography and other artistic disciplines. Through direct interaction with the materials and clear intention to become part of the image, I try to confront, the sometimes “questioned,” role of photography as an art form. - What is art? Or better yet, what isn't?” - Alex Leme, 2009 Alex Leme discovered his love of photography at an early age through his many family trips around Brazil where he was born and raised. From these roots sprang a desire to explore the world and its innumerable facets through the lens of a camera. He attended the University of Westminster in London, England then completed his formal education at Cambury College in Goiana, Brazil. After teaching English, producing theater, and working as a marketing director, he moved to San Francisco, CA. 2004 marked the beginning of a successful career in corporate finance as a consultant for a major investment firm. After changing financial institutions in 2006 relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2009, Alex answered his heart’s calling by abandoning his financial career in order to pursue his lifelong dream as a photographer. He is now pursuing a degree in Art History from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Alex Leme - review of Eggs from Arts+Culture DFW February 2010 (.pdf, 25k) |
